Plagiarism Policy

The Journal of Artificial Intelligence in Medical and Veterinary Sciences (JAIMVS) considers plagiarism and other forms of publication misconduct serious violations of academic integrity. The journal is committed to ensuring the originality, transparency, and ethical integrity of all published work.

1. Forms of Plagiarism

Plagiarism includes, but is not limited to:

  • Direct copying of text, data, ideas, or concepts without appropriate citation.
  • Paraphrasing or rephrasing without proper acknowledgment of the original source.
  • Self-plagiarism or substantial reuse of previously published material without appropriate citation or disclosure.
  • Verbatim or substantially similar translation of previously published material without proper attribution.
  • Unauthorized use or reproduction of images, figures, tables, software, datasets, or other intellectual property.
  • Duplicate or redundant publication of substantially overlapping research.

2. Plagiarism Detection

JAIMVS uses iThenticate plagiarism-detection software to screen submitted manuscripts.

Manuscripts are normally checked at two stages:

  1. Initial screening: before peer review.
  2. Final screening: before acceptance, including consideration of revised manuscripts.

The journal generally expects the overall similarity index to be below 20%. However, the similarity percentage is not, by itself, evidence of plagiarism. Editors evaluate the nature, source, and context of the identified similarities. Properly cited references, standard scientific terminology, methodological descriptions, and other legitimate similarities may contribute to the similarity score.

Manuscripts showing substantial or inappropriate similarity may be returned to the authors for clarification or revision, rejected, or investigated as potential publication misconduct.

3. Consequences of Plagiarism

Depending on the severity and circumstances, JAIMVS may:

  • Request clarification or correction from the authors.
  • Return the manuscript for appropriate revision.
  • Reject the manuscript.
  • Notify the authors' institution or relevant authority in serious cases.
  • Restrict or suspend future submissions from authors involved in serious or repeated misconduct.
  • Retract a published article in accordance with the journal's Correction and Retraction Policy.

4. Authors' Responsibilities

Authors are responsible for ensuring that:

  • All sources are properly cited and referenced.
  • Direct quotations are clearly identified and appropriately attributed.
  • Paraphrased material is properly acknowledged.
  • Previously published material is appropriately cited and disclosed.
  • Permission is obtained when required for copyrighted material.
  • Submitted manuscripts are original and have not been published elsewhere in substantially similar form.

5. Artificial Intelligence and Plagiarism

The use of artificial intelligence (AI) tools does not exempt authors from responsibility for originality and proper attribution. Authors remain responsible for ensuring that AI-assisted content does not reproduce copyrighted or previously published material without appropriate acknowledgment.

AI-generated or AI-assisted text should not be used to conceal plagiarism or duplicate publication. Manuscripts may be subject to additional editorial scrutiny where significant concerns regarding originality arise.

6. Repository and Preprint Deposition

Authors who have previously deposited a manuscript, thesis, dissertation, preprint, or other version of their work in a repository must disclose this during submission and provide appropriate citation and attribution.

Reuse of previously deposited material must comply with applicable copyright and licensing requirements. Authors should clearly distinguish the submitted manuscript from any previously available version.

7. Post-Publication Plagiarism

If plagiarism or substantial unattributed duplication is identified after publication, JAIMVS will investigate the matter in accordance with its publication ethics procedures. Depending on the findings, the journal may publish a correction, editorial notice, expression of concern, or retraction.

JAIMVS is committed to maintaining the highest standards of originality, academic integrity, and responsible scholarly communication.
